BOOFER UPDATE

Vet just called, said his blood count is about what it was right after his transfusion last night, but she would like to hold him at least another day and check his blood a couple more times to make sure it's holding.

She said he's been a very good boy, although he doesn't like one of the male techs, but he does like the "girls".  She also said he seems to love his kennel, and had to pee before they got around to taking him for a walk.  Rather than pee in his kennel, he managed to pee outside the kennel.  It's amazing to hear how social he is, considering he's basically been wild his whole life, with very little responsibility to do what someone else wanted him to do.

I asked if they had any idea what caused this.  She said a lot of times they never find out.  Just heard from a friend that her cousin had almost the exact same scenario yesterday up in Phoenix, with her 9 year old dog.  The vet said there was no guarantee, so they put her down.  Of course if his red blood count doesn't hold, it might get a little more complicated.  His liver x-rayed a little large, she said if the bone marrow wasn't manufacturing red blood cells,  the spleen and liver would try to take over and that might account for the enlargement.

So it sounds like, if his blood numbers hold, we'll pick him up tomorrow.  If not, I guess they'll do another transfusion.

It sounds like things are improving. It is strange he is so friendly with the staff, people are sticking and handleing him and he is ok with it.

Didn't get to pick him up yesterday, his blood count had dropped a little. We live so far away they wanted to make sure he didn't need another transfusion. Hopefully we can pick him up today.

He may be a more loving pet when he gets home. He should be, he will soon be a million dollar dog. My daughter has a lab, a pet and farm dog. She run over him twice and her husband run over him once. He had his hips put together with metal and screws, she called him the million dollar dog.

Well, that's what you do when you take on the responsibility for animals. Your daughter's dog needs to learn to sleep somewhere else.........LOL I've read up on this particular problem and Boofer's chances of surviving a year are 30-50%. He's on long term drugs and we'll at least give him a chance.

I admire you and the care you give all animals in your care. We took care of any pet we had but do not have one now. Our last two cats lived to be 17 and 19, nice old age for a cat. We have tame rabbits in our yard. They belong to a neighbor that just let's them run loose and multiply. I do feed them scrapes but don't want to encourage thirty some rabbits to live in my yard. They loved my garden so much we had to fence it, now they just eat flowers.
