Molly's feet

We're still working on Molly's feet every morning & she's still snapping those feet to attention when asked.  Animal Crackers are the answer to the world's problems I guess, at least she thinks so....!!! 

 

Her feet are all nice & dry, although I have to pick them out every morning, she keeps everything she steps on, it looks like.  One of the rear ones had a flap of frog that was holding in moisture.  I could count the times I've tried to use a hoof knife on one hand.  I don't  have the strength in my wrists to use one effectively & I've also never learned how to sharpen one.  

 

 I finally managed to get the flap "gnawed" off.  She was such a good little girl, just stood there with her foot in the air.  I finally got the piece off, but not because I knew what I was doing.  Actually that's not true, I knew what I wanted to do, just didn't have the expertise. 

 

My order from Valley Vet came yesterday, so I now have No Thrush powder.  This is the first powder thrush treatment I've seen.  Most thrush medicine is liquid or a gel, which of course adds more moisture to a situation caused by trapped moisture.  Right now Molly's feet are all dry, so I think I'll just continue with my apple cider vinegar, or just pick out her feet once a day.  If they are dry shouldn't even need the vinegar probably. 

 

John had a jeep tour yesterday so I did evening chores by myself.  Not a problem except Red was an unknown entity as far as going back in her pen.  She had only done it once, & that was for John, not me.  She stood around, watched everyone else going in their pens, & when the time came, followed me into her pen, like she had done it for years.  She's really a nice mule, & seems to be settling in just fine. 

 

Tomorrow is the last day for Cheyenne's Naxcel shots.  I'll be glad & I know she will be.  So far there is no new discharge,  hopefully this will take care of the uterine strep infection.  If not, we'll have to do it again.

 

 

Racing tonight, in fact not only am I racing, my son is going to have his Super Stock out & hopefully my grandson J.R. will have his.  Last I heard they were working like ants trying to get it put back together.  He hasn't raced it in about a year, & since his Dad's car takes the same parts, parts had been cannibalized to keep Rod's car on the track.  It's never a good idea to let a race car sit for long, with good useable parts on it, because they will disappear........!!!! LOL

 

 

BLOG HAS BEEN DOWN

Hopefully this will load when I get thru writing.  Since earlier this week, nothing could be saved or published to the blog.  People from all over the world were begging them to fix it.  I usually use Mozilla Firefox, tried Chome, and finally got thru using Internet Exployer, which I don't like at all.  I'll probably pick up some STD using it......!!! (G)

 

Let's see I've about fogotten where I was.  Oh! yes, hauling a new girl for a woman that wanted a friend for her lonely jenny.  We had such a good visit with Win while we traveled to the other side of Tucson.  She's a mature lady that has lived in Tucson or SE Arizona most of her life, and knows about the good old days, so she had lots of stories to tell. 

 

We got to the rescue and the woman wasn't there, so we had to wait awhile.  In the meantime we introduced outselves to the 6 donkeys and 5-6 mini horses.  They were all very friendly,  John zeroed in on a very nice young black gelding and wanted to bring him home.  John said he looked like a young BlackJack.  I have to admit he was very tempting.

 

We had figured out which jenny was the one for us we thought.  She was a very nice friendly girl and when the woman got there she said we were right.

 

Her name is Diane and she actually loaded pretty good, especially when we wave a cookie in front of her nose. 

 

Got to Win's place, let Diane out with Jenny and they immediately started running all over a very large soft field, Jenny in front and Diane trying to catch up.  I was a little worried because Jenny is somewhere on the north side of 40.  Unfortunately she stumbled a little and came up limping and is still limping from what we've heard.  But they are getting along just fine, so hopefully Jenny's limp will go away soon.  They put them in a smaller, area, so she can't move around so much.

 Our guys are all doing pretty good right now.  I've already put a fly mask on Rusty the mule.  He's pink skinned & his eyes are always goopy, don't know if he has allergies or what.  But a fly mask cuts down on the sun and hopefully the dust.  His eyes stay cleaner with a mask.  There some flies around, but so far they aren't being obnoxious to the donkeys. 

 

I'm still working on Boaz's knee with Wonder Dust.  I'm afraid it's going to have to be scraped again to get the proud flesh off.  The Wonder Dust is suppose to eat proud flesh, but so far the last little bit is being very stubborn. 

 

Yesterday we took Cheyennne in to the vet for a uterine flush, doesn't that sound like fun.......?????  When we took her to the vet a couple of weeks ago, we thought she had a urinary tract infection or something like that.  Dr. Megan said maybe not, & using a goat speculum (who even knew they had such things) checked her out.  Said she saw inflammaton, so did a swab to send off to the lab.  Finally got the lab report, she has a chronic strep infection of the uterus.  I'm just learning all sorts of fascinating little tidbits......!!! LOL

 

So she got flushed with Naxcel & she will be getting Naxcel shots for the next 10 days.  Hopefully that will take care of it.  If not, she'll get to go back for another flush.  She wasn't too bad, BUT you could tell it wasn't her favorite thing to do.  Can't say I blame her...!!!! 







Pepper has an appointment to see the vet Friday morning.  Maybe she will have some ideas about what is going on with him.  Maybe not, I'm sure he is well past his "expiration" date by most standards.  At least she can look in his mouth & see how the tumor is doing, & give him a general check-up.  

This is the before & after of Gus' trip to the vet to see what is going on with his leg.  This morning it looks even better, so I assume we are on the right track.  Haven't gotten the results back from the swabs & scrapings yet, but Animax & Naxcel seem to be doing the job.  

The vet was going to have me give him Tucoprim, BUT, Claire had said equine that are Insulin Resistant, shouldn't be given sulfa drugs.  Unfortunately she didn't tell me why, so when the vet asked why, I had no answer.  That happens quite often with me........!!!  At my age my brain is full & there isn't much room for anything else, so I rely on my good friends to "try" to keep me in the loop of knowledge.  (G)

According to Dr. Eleanor Kellon, sulfa drugs can cause an insulin rise in people studies, but is a complete unknown in IR horses.  It's just another piece of information that makes sense although hasn't been proven.  Why take a chance if you don't have to, so no sulfa for IR donkeys around here.  I printed out information to take to my vet when we take Pepper in Friday.  Who knows, it might give her information that will help her be better informed for her patients. 

He's having to stay in the pens because of the bandage & polo wraps, but he doesn't really seem to mind.  It's getting cool enough here at night (52 degrees last night) that we might be able to leave it upwrapped in a few days.  We've already noticed a lot less flies.  He doesn't usually go too far from the pens & the house, but he does like to roam around. 

  

 

We've been calling her Missy, she showed up here last week, hungry & scared.  She looks like a purebred Great Dane.  We've asked around & no one has claimed her.  John's theory is, she's recently had pups, & once the money making puppies were weaned, the owners came out to the first mailboxes on our road & dumped her.  

Our 2 dogs split a can of dog food & each get 1 1/2 cups of dry food a day.  They weigh about 60-75 pounds each.  At first she was eating about 18-20 cups of dry food a day, I need to ask John if he's backed off on the amount yet?  She's very sweet but shy & taller than the minis.  I've been in touch with a Dane rescue in Phoenix, there aren't any Dane rescues in Tucson, to see if they have a place for her.
